Welcoming Omidyar Network
February 20, 2015

At DataKind, community fuels our work. That’s why we are honored to welcome Omidyar Network (ON) as one of our newest supporters. ON is one of the most visionary and technologically savvy groups out there, and they represent an incredible network of organizations working at the forefront of technology and social change like Change.org, Code for America, Ushahidi, the Sunlight Foundation and even DataKind’s home sweet home, Civic Hall!

Omidyar Network invests in entrepreneurs who share a commitment to advancing social good at the pace and scale the world needs today. We’re being supported as part of their Governance & Citizen Engagement Initiative that seeks to strengthen the relationship between citizens and their governments. As they say, “open information is meaningful only if citizens can make use of it to improve the quality of their lives and of those around them.”

We couldn’t agree more. That’s why we’re getting ready to celebrate Open Data Day February 21st. It’s also why we’ll continue to do our work bringing together data science and social sector experts to harness the power of data science and open information in the service of humanity. Stay tuned for more projects doing just this, building upon our previous projects that used public data to support human rights, to find children in need of hospice care, to inform policy makers about child poverty in DC, to help government agencies leverage their own data, or to help nonprofits share data with each other to maximize their collective impact. This is just the beginning!

We’re also eager to explore partnerships with ON members to tackle thorny problems for the greater good and share learnings on some of our favorite topics - responsible use of data science for the greater good, the fine art of pro bono management and scaling impact.

Needless to say, we are excited and humbled to be a part of this inspiring group and are grateful for Omidyar Network’s support helping us to further our work using data science to address critical humanitarian challenges!
