As many of you know, this is a momentous year for DataKind. We received a major grant from The Rockefeller Foundation and the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth to continue DataKind’s mission to harness the power of data science and AI in the service of humanity. As we enter our eighth year since our founding, we have great ambitions to expand our global community of data scientists committed to social change and to focus our projects in issue areas that will allow us to learn even more about where data science can make a difference.
In order to do that, we’re going to be growing in so many ways. We’ll be focusing our pro bono projects in key issue areas and increasing our activities within impact practices areas, like Community Health Work and Inclusive Growth. We’ll be transitioning to support a thriving data science for good ecosystem writ large. And we’ll be expanding our leadership, staff, and operations at home to ensure that DataKind stays healthy as it grows.
In order to maximize the potential on the horizon, we’re going to need new skills from people who have built and sustained international organizations and that complement and exceed my skills. To support these shifts, it’s with great excitement that we’re announcing the creation of a new President position!
The President will manage DataKind’s organizational and programmatic strategy as it embarks upon this next phase of growth and evolution. I’ll continue to evangelize and build partnerships for our work and the Data for Good movement, and guide the long-term strategy and vision of the company. Our Chief Operating Officer, Russatta Buford, will be a critical partner to the President, and the leader of our operational efforts, ensuring we have healthy financials, efficient technology, and rock solid internal operations.
I’m thrilled to welcome this new member to DataKind’s Executive Team. We just kicked off our search, and we’d love your help in looking for folks who:
- Are experienced leaders capable of managing through times of change
- Are well-versed in the ways data science and AI can, can’t, and shouldn’t be applied to challenges facing the social sector
- Are eager to be on the frontier of applying technology to social change across multiple stakeholders around the world
- Are models of DataKind’s values and committed to DataKind’s mission, vision, and ethos
We’re so appreciative to you, our community of tenacious techies, humble humanitarians, future-looking funders, and wide-ranging experts, who drive our work every day. As I’ve said before, DataKind’s end result of all of this work is that anyone who holds a “data science-able” social problem is able to ethically apply, create, or commission a data solution for it, and I’m excited for this next step in DataKind’s growth.
