Open Call for New DataKind Chapters!
March 10, 2017

Oh - it’s happening. We’re going to be launching FOUR new Chapters this August to advance our mission in new communities around the world.

Apply by April 30th to put your community on the DataKind map > [Link to landing page]

Why now?

In 2014, DataKind put out an open call for data scientists across the world who wanted to tackle the world’s toughest challenges through data science.  Some of those data scientists had participated in events and projects with our staff, some of them just thought it was a great idea to bring their best skills and passion for community to the table and see what happened.  The result has been a Global Chapter Network of data science leaders from Bangalore, India to Dublin, Ireland.

Along the way, we learned together how to engage volunteers, develop trust with nonprofit partners and build a thriving community.  We are now ready to take those lessons and find four new cities with passionate data scientists and nonprofit professionals who are ready to take a (supported) leap of faith and help drive greater impact in their community and share those learnings with a dedicated, supportive group of leaders from across the globe.

What do Chapter Leaders do?

Chapter Leaders are first and foremost community builders and event organizers, bringing people together at Meetups, Project Accelerators, and DataDives. Just as importantly, Chapter Leaders must be excellent project managers, able to bring together data scientists and social sector experts to solve problems through the ethical application of data science. It’s a volunteer role that will take about ten hours a week.

The first thing you will likely do as a Chapter Leader is to find a dozen or more friends and colleagues who want to help!  From there, you’ll build bridges between the data science and nonprofit communities with support from DataKind Staff to get your first events and projects up and running.

All new Chapter Leaders will attend the 2017 Global Network Summit in August where you will be trained in DataKind projects and processes and meet DataKind staff and Chapter Leaders from across the globe.
