Sunday September 27

Social Good Summit (noon-6pm)

  • Give your best pitch to the MasterCard Center for Inclusive Growth Priceless® Elevator of your idea to help end poverty and enhance worldwide economic inclusion. For each pitch, MasterCard will donate up to $50,000 to DataKind to help end poverty!

Clinton Global Initiative - Hacking the Solution: Connecting Experts from Technology and International Development (12:30-2pm)

  • Panel discussion about applying advancements in technology to global challenges featuring DataKind Founder & Executive Director Jake Porway.


Monday September 28

Bloomberg Data for Good Exchange (8am-5pm)

  • All day Check out Team Simpa Networks' poster on their recently completed DataCorps project predicting customer repayment behavior to ensure more families and households in rural India have reliable access to electricity.
  • 1-2pm Panel discussion on how data scientists and nonprofits can work together featuring DataKind Founder & Executive Director Jake Porway.

UN Global Partnership on Sustainable Development Launch Party Data (2-5pm)

  • Join this historic high-level political launch of this UN initiative dedicated to harnessing the data revolution to achieve and measure the Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

Cloudera Cares Data as a Force for Good Meetup (6:30-8pm

Wednesday September 30

Strata + Hadoop World - Protecting the Humanity in Data Flash Talks (1:15-2:45pm)
DataKind Founder and Executive Director Jake Porway hosts two sessions back-to-back that explore ethical questions in data science for good projects.

  • 1:15-1:55: Cathy O’Neil, author of Weapons of Math Destruction, will present on the ethics of algorithms; Vlad Dubovskiy, Data Scientist at, will present on the ethics of data activism and Kamalesh Rao, DataKind volunteer, will present on his recent project with social enterprise Simpa Networks targeting services without excluding the needy.
  • 2:05-2:45: Bob Filbin, Chief Data Scientist at Crisis Text Line, will present on their approach to personalized crisis counseling and Danah Boyd, Founder of Data & Society Research Institute, will present on the challenges of interpreting results.

Thursday October 1

Strata + Hadoop World - What does it take to apply data science for social good? (Main stage, 9:50-10am)

  • More than good intentions or a good knowledge of R, using data science to tackle social issues depends on close collaboration between data science and issue area experts. But getting everyone to the table is only the first step. Jake Porway, Founder and Executive Director of DataKind, unveils five keys for successful data science for good projects, based on the organization’s three years of work rallying thousands of volunteers worldwide to give back.

Friday October 2

DataPoint (9am-6pm)

  • A conference for the NYC data science community, DataPoint 2015 will feature presentations by local data scientists on their most exciting projects.

Sunday October 4

DataKind's Data for Good Global Picnic (5-7:30pm)

  • Meet us at Brooklyn Bridge Park to enjoy a sunset (and international snack bar!) with our Chapter Leaders from around the world and your fellow data for good enthusiasts here in NYC.
