Launching Catalytic Growth with $2 Million Omidyar Network Investment
October 13, 2016

We are honored to announce that Omidyar Network has renewed its support of DataKind with an investment of $2 million to support DataKind’s growth over the next three years.

Not only will this catalytic funding help us scale overall, it will also help us test new approaches using predictive analytics to support the organizations in Omidyar Network’s Governance and Citizen Engagement portfolio. Specifically, we’ll be seeking to understand how data might help predict and identify issues of financial transparency and fiscal governance to ultimately strengthen the relationship between citizens and their governments.

“Omidyar Network is proud to support DataKind’s innovative model to engage data scientists in addressing urgent issues that impact the lives of millions of people,” says Stacy Donohue, investment partner at Omidyar Network. “DataKind has been a pioneer in the emerging field of data science for good by mobilizing data scientists via a tiered engagement model and global chapters in five countries. From weekend-long DataDives to short-term DataCorps projects to in-house projects with DataKind Labs, DataKind’s volunteers and staff are poised to create substantial impact on issues facing governments and nonprofits globally.”

Omidyar Network has long been in the DataKind family, supporting our Chapter Network worldwide and even participating in our Global Chapter Summit a year ago. How appropriate then to have this renewed and deepened support just in time for this year’s summit where we’ll be planning DataKind’s path ahead.

“Growth capital is not readily available in the nonprofit sector so we are absolutely humbled to receive this generous investment from Omidyar Network,” says our founder and executive director Jake Porway. “We are equally grateful and humbled to work with such an incredible community of organizations that make up Omidyar Network’s investees. DataKind’s model works only when the right combination of data, resources and, most importantly, people come together to apply data science to tackle the world’s toughest challenges. As an organization that shares our belief in the power of networks to create impact through learning and iteration, Omidyar Network’s support is a game changer as they are providing both the needed financial investment and connections to some of the world’s top social innovators to help us scale our efforts like never before.”

Stay tuned for more updates as we enter an exciting new phase of growth and new focus to our project work in partnership with Omidyar Network and its portfolio of world-changing investees.
