We’re excited to celebrate yet another stellar member of the DataKind team. Let’s hear it for Jemilah Magnusson as DataKind’s Director, Marketing + Communications!

Jemilah brings 20 years of experience amplifying the voices of global, mission-driven organizations in nonprofit, government, and public affairs. Prior to joining DataKind, Jemilah led communications at the Institute for Transportation & Development Policy, a global organization working to mitigate climate change with sustainable, equitable urban transport. 

At DataKind, Jemilah leads marketing and communications, building brand awareness and amplifying our role in tackling systemic challenges. She’ll also work across teams to tell our story and build support among partners, funders, and volunteers. Jemilah’s passionate about building and improving systems to advance quality of life for people in urban communities, and in equipping civil society with the powerful tools of data-driven storytelling, and we couldn’t be more excited to have her with us.

What were you up to before DataKind?

Just before joining DataKind, I’d been consulting for a pro-democracy think tank called Public Agenda, but before that I was global communications director for the Institute for Transportation & Development Policy (ITDP), an organization that partnered with cities and major institutions around the world to implement sustainable and equitable urban transport systems.

Why are you excited to join DataKind?

I actually knew DataKind from way back in 2015. ITDP was working on Vision Zero with the City of New York when DataKind was also working with them to map traffic collisions in Manhattan, leading to design changes on the street. I saw very clearly how this work can make a real impact on day to day life. I've also been in the nonprofit world for a long time, and I know how valuable access to these tools would be for them, and how transformative it would be for the industry overall to be able to make more big-picture, data-driven decisions.

What do you like to do in your free time?

My partner and I love to go see theater, everything from Broadway to alt comedy. We're often at a show or taking long city walks with our dog. I also took up sewing during the pandemic, so I have a few projects that I'm working on, right now it's a couple of t-shirt pillowcases and curtains. We'll see how they turn out!
