Welcome John Harnisher, DataKind’s Head of Research

Let’s hear it for the newest member of the team. Join us in celebrating John Harnisher as DataKind’s Head of Research!

John brings over 20 years of experience as a leader and researcher in the fields of data science, analytics, assessment, employee selection, and organizational development to DataKind. Before joining DataKind, he led research, data science, machine learning, and assessment functions for Kaplan, Talogy (previously PSI Caliper), and I/O solutions. In this new role at DataKind, John will be a key cross-functional collaborator with autonomy to design, propose, and implement processes that will ensure DataKind delivers best-in-class data products for the social sector.

As a strong believer in developing and completing research and data science projects that positively impact society, we’re thrilled to have him with us. Learn more about John below.

What were you up to before DataKind?

Immediately before joining DataKind, I was leading analytics and reporting for a start up in the coaching and mentoring space. Before that I was VP of Data Science and Learning Science for a large education organization. During that time I enjoyed the challenge of tracking the progress of students from learning activities all the way through to actual learning impact. The goal of understanding behavior change through data remains a driver for me in all the work I do.

Why are you excited to join DataKind?

I’m very happy to join an organization where I’m proud of the mission and excited to do everything I can to amplify and disseminate that mission. The need to bring data science, machine learning, and AI to social impact organizations grows more important all the time, and I’m thrilled to be part of the team which is bringing impactful results to these organizations.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy reading, traveling, teaching, and gardening. I ran my first marathon during the early months of the pandemic. I ran it alone since all large events like marathons were canceled. I’m hoping to start training again soon and to complete a full and crowded marathon in the next year.

Join the DataKind movement.
