DataKind is built on the dedication of individuals who believe in the power of data science and AI to tackle the world’s toughest challenges. That’s why we’re delighted to welcome a data scientist who embodies these values: Vish Pillai.
Vish is driven by a passion to utilize data responsibly, particularly to serve communities within education. His arrival strengthens our team with both deep technical expertise and a genuine commitment to social impact.
At DataKind, Vish will be at the forefront of developing and deploying the Student Success Tool, a scalable data science product with the potential to significantly improve student graduation rates. He’ll own the entire process, ensuring ethical and robust methodologies. We’re incredibly excited to have Vish bring his unique blend of skills and values to our team.
Vish’s journey includes five years at Intel, where he gained valuable industry experience as a data scientist, and a master’s degree from UC Berkeley in information and data science. He’s also actively involved in his community, volunteering as a tutor and mentor.
Let’s get to know Vish better. Check out the Q&A below!
What were you up to before DataKind?
I worked at Intel Corporation for the last five years with two years as a data scientist. I developed Automated Defect Classification (ADC) models, which helped our manufacturing engineers find root cause and other quality issues on their fab tools. While at Intel, I also received my master’s in information and data science from UC Berkeley.
Why are you excited to join DataKind?
I’ve been looking to find a company or organization where the impact of my work is both tangible and directly benefits communities—and DataKind aligns with this vision perfectly. With its diverse projects spanning sectors such as education, climate/environment, and frontline health, I’m excited about the opportunity to contribute across these areas. It’s truly an honor to be part of an organization that upholds its values in every project.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Based in New York City, I spend my free time tutoring underserved populations and learning jazz piano. One of my passions is carrying on my family’s legacy of cooking South-Indian cuisine while adapting the recipes to my plant-based diet.
