Empowering Advisors, Supporting Students: Introducing Edvise

A powerful new platform from DataKind, with support from Google.org Fellows

Edvise, a powerful new platform from DataKind, is a freely available advising support platform that helps colleges boost student success through timely, data-informed guidance—no technical overhaul required. Built with and for advisors, Edvise is already expanding across 50+ institutions and is on track to reach 100 by the end of 2025. With support from a Google.org grant and fellowship, the tool is free, easy to onboard, and designed to help more students stay on track and reach graduation.

Across the country, higher education leaders are grappling with a shared challenge: how to improve student success with increasingly limited resources. Advisors are managing caseloads of 350+ students, often without the tools or data they need to prioritize outreach. Students, especially those at broad access institutions, risk falling through the cracks, not because of lack of potential, but lack of support.

That’s why we’re excited to introduce the newly branded Edvise—an AI-powered advising support platform developed by DataKind and backed by multi-year funding and fellowship from Google.org. Built for student support teams, Edvise helps identify students in need of timely interventions and equips advisors with actionable insights to keep learners on track to graduate.

“Too many students don’t get the support they need, not because their institution doesn’t care, but because their advisors are overwhelmed and under-resourced. Edvise is helping close that support gap by giving advisors the right data at the right time to take action.” - Lauren Woodman, CEO, DataKind

Built for the Realities of Higher Ed

Edvise empowers under-resourced institutions by addressing:

  • Heavy advising caseloads
  • Gaps in access to data and technology
  • The drive to provide proactive, personalized support to every student, despite limited resources
  • The need for solutions that fit tight budgets and existing tech stacks

What sets Edvise apart is its focus on accessibility and impact. Institutions don’t need a data science team, expensive upgrades, or a complete systems overhaul—just a commitment to helping students thrive.

“For any institution looking to enhance student advising, improve retention, and create a more personalized support system, Edvise is a must-have. The actionable insights have influenced more than just how we use data—they’ve enhanced our operations and are transforming how we understand student success and well-being at UCF.” - Tyler Walsh, Director, Center for Higher Education Innovation, University of Central Florida

With Edvise, advisors get:

  • Custom onboarding and support in as little as 15 hours
  • A clear, easy-to-interpret dashboard
  • A predictive model tailored to your institution and students, focused on the student outcomes that matter most to your community, with additional reporting as to factors influencing predicted outcomes
  • Insights to help determine actions and outreach strategies
  • Data insights that can seamlessly integrate with other institutional platforms
  • No cost to your institution

Real Results, Real Impact

Edvise is being implemented and used in 50+ institutions today and the results are positive.

At John Jay College of Criminal Justice, one of our early adopters, an early version of the tool helped advisors increase the senior graduation rate from 54% to 86% over two years, as shared in The New York Times. Advisors report greater clarity, better prioritization, and stronger relationships with students.

"Partnering with DataKind showed us what’s possible when data is used not just smartly, but compassionately. Their leadership in data philanthropy helped us boost John Jay's senior graduation rate from 54% to 86% in just two years—transforming lives by turning insight into action. This is what the human side of AI looks like: real people, real progress, and a future driven by purpose." - Dara N. Byrne, PhD, Former Associate Provost for Undergraduate Retention & Dean of Undergraduate Studies, John Jay College of Criminal Justice

Scaling to 100 Institutions and Beyond

We’re working toward an exciting milestone: reaching 100 institutions by the end of 2025 and empowering more advisors to deliver proactive, personalized support at scale.

One of the biggest unlocks? Edvise works with the data schools already submit to third parties for compliance and reporting, so there’s limited additional start-up time. Thanks to partnerships like ours with the National Student Clearinghouse, institutions can implement Edvise quickly and seamlessly without adding to advisors’ workloads.

"At the National Student Clearinghouse, we’re proud to see our Postsecondary Data Partnership (PDP) powering Edvise. By enhancing the PDP’s Analysis-Ready (AR) files, DataKind is accelerating the delivery of actionable insights to institutions—enabling them to make timely, data-informed decisions that improve student outcomes. This collaboration underscores the value and impact of PDP in advancing student success through data." - Marty Schmidt, Product Manager, Postsecondary Data Partnership, National Student Clearinghouse
