About the Opportunity

The objectives of most successful organizations are forward-looking, innovative, and sector-changing, but nonprofits all over the world are on a mission to create a better future for the communities they serve, often without the technical capacity to accelerate those paths. We need to shine a light on how advanced solutions like AI, machine learning and robust analytics tools can benefit mission-driven organizations. How do you take really technical and specific use cases and tell compelling, engaging, and creative stories that appeal to a broader audience? That’s where you come in!

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Director of Marketing + Communications will be responsible for building, leading, and coordinating global marketing programs for DataKind. This leader will build DataKind’s brand and work closely across teams to develop impactful programs that produce a prospective funder pool, differentiate DataKind from other skilled volunteering programs, and establish us as the go-to technical partner to mission-driven organizations seeking to leverage cutting-edge technology in achieving their respective goals. The Director will advance our work in amplifying our role in tackling systemic challenges. We’re looking for a data-driven storyteller who can drive results for us across our PR, communications, and marketing goals.

In this role, the Director will manage one full-time member but will be supported by a PR firm through June 2022, two to three consultants, and a graphic designer for much, if not all, of FY22. The Director will work closely with other team leaders in Programs, the Development team, and the CEO.

What You'll Do

The Director of Marketing + Communications will be responsible for the following in addition to any other project or tasks assigned by the COO:

Marketing Strategy

  • Build and execute a comprehensive, integrated marketing, digital, and PR strategy that aligns with overall DataKind mission and goals
  • Work with the Programs and Development teams on building strategic marketing opportunities with our partners and funders
  • Support the Global Volunteers team in attracting volunteers for both general and targeted project opportunities, celebrating key successes, and coordinating promotion of events throughout the year
  • Create strategies based on our peer set, event trends, constituent analytics, audience reach, frequency of campaigns, impact of media, and more
  • Leverage funder, partner, and volunteer insights to inform acquisition and retention strategies

Content Creation

  • Draft, edit, produce, and promote blog posts, case studies, mass emails, newsletters, and short videos to engage our key audiences and fulfill funder requirements
  • Drive engagement through social media and media sharing platforms, leveraging data insights to inform strategic communications and experiences that move people
  • Lead the creation, distribution, and maintenance of all collateral and content (print and digital) including, but not limited to, newsletters, publications, presentations, photography and videography, fundraising materials, digital/social media, and website
  • Manage the continued development and use of DataKind’s branding and graphic identity, establishing and enforcing guidelines to ensure its consistent application
  • Create a high-impact strategy that supports fundraising by creating brochures, prospect decks, marketing collateral, industry presentations, and the like

Thought Leadership and Media Outreach

  • Work with the management and PR firm (secured for first half of FY22) to demonstrate thought leadership via content marketing that includes whitepapers/guides, checklists, infographics, videos, social media, and blog posts
  • Train staff, volunteers, and periodically project partners to represent DataKind in thought leadership forums
  • Serve as primary lead for thought leadership opportunities, starting from the drafting, review, and/or submission of abstracts, to speaker training, to appropriate promotion plan during and after the opportunity has occurred
  • Develop and implement earned media strategies, fielding inquiries, and pitching stories to local and national media

Team Leadership

  • Coach and develop one staff member
  • Manage two to three consultants (marketing, social media and communications) and a graphic designer (on retainer basis) as well as the relationship with a PR consultancy
  • Lead the continuous improvement and maintenance of resources, guidelines, and best practices as well as the process of ensuring they are utilized while creating efficiencies

  • You have brand building experience. You know what it takes to develop scalable programs and unique integrated campaigns.
  • You’re an exceptional storyteller. Whether it’s in long form or short and pithy, you’re a writer yourself and can help others improve their writing.
  • You’re able to translate complex ideas into clear, compelling, and thoughtful messaging. You can pull out the “So What?” that establishes relevance and highlights social impact. You speak the language of nonprofits, funders, and influencers.
  • You’re able to work with multiple stakeholders to craft pitches and stories. You’ll work with staff members, volunteers, project partners, and funders in doing so.
  • You’re a strategic leader who also enjoys getting your hands dirty in the execution. Whether it’s on your own or through others, you get the nuts and bolts in place in record time, always with support and input from the rest of the organization.
  • You enjoy cultivating relationships with reporters, journalists, and media outlets in support of growing a brand. In fact, you already have relationships you can leverage and are eager to continue those that DataKind has established over the years.
  • You center equity in your practice. Along with others, you’ll share in the organization’s work to advance anti-racism in our operations, practices, and communications.

How You’ll be Measured

At the end of one year, the Director of Marketing + Communications will have:

  • Created a integrated marketing strategy that guides our activities for the coming year
  • Developed a data-driven marketing plan for funder prospecting that sources leads (for the Development team to qualify), and establish a methodology to measure, track, and course-correct
  • Managed a successful 10th anniversary campaign that support fundraising goals and garner an expanded follower base
  • Overseen the creation of thought leadership pieces written by or on behalf of the CEO, staff members, and others in our community, ensuring placement in relevant forums (e.g. media hits, conferences, speaking engagements, poster presentations, panel discussions)
  • Led the creation of a suite of marketing collateral that support programs, partnership, and sponsorship needs

Qualifications

  • Alignment with DataKind mission and values
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in progressively more responsible marketing positions, preferably in technology, start-ups, nonprofits, or skills-based; at least 3 years in managerial position
  • Articulate storyteller; must be able to both speak and write with passion, clarity, and purpose
  • Strategic thinker with proven ability to craft and execute impactful marketing campaigns, pitches, and product positioning
  • Experience working across a wide variety of marketing channels including media, social, and content within a startup environment with limited resources
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and flexibility a MUST - a leader who is willing to “roll up sleeves” and get the job done during a period of rapid growth
  • Familiarity with and/or desire to learn about writing that hinges on the application of data science, AI, and machine learning on the world’s most challenging societal issues (preferred); comfort in writing about complex, technical matters such that audiences of varying levels of familiarity can engage with the topic (required)
  • Graphic design sensibility or strong familiarity with the use of graphic design as a key communications element preferred
  • Proficiency in Canva, Mailchimp, Adobe Creative Suite, and other email marketing and campaign tools
  • Comfort with communicating internally and managing projects with Asana, Salesforce, Slack, and Google Suite
  • Proven experience in using communications and marketing to empower communities through co-creation; track record in developing and managing communications and marketing to drive consumer action
  • Experience working through a lens of diversity, equity, inclusion, and sense of belonging, particularly with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences
